NM in carport.

NM should be OK because the carport is normally dry location. (well it depends which location of the carport and how much it rains in your area)

But FWIW, I would install the UF cable.

2011 NEC

334.12 Uses Not Permitted.
(A) Types NM, NMC, and NMS. Types NM, NMC, and
NMS cables shall not be permitted as follows:
(1) In any dwelling or structure not specifically permitted
in 334.10(1), (2), and (3)

I do not call a carport a storage "building".

I think a car port qualifies. Whether it is a damp area or not is something else. Since a covered porch is considered outside and thus damp, I am thinking a car port is as well.
 
I really don't see how a carport is not a damp location. If it is exposed or if the nm is run in conduit than UF- IMO. Of course most crawl spaces are damp and I have never seen nm affected by it-- I think NM should be rated damp location
