Splicing at a Receptacle

Hey all. First post here, but I've gotten a lot of useful information from these forums, so thank you all for that.

So here's the question:
I know that it is very common that a splice is made at a receptacle by terminating the line and load sides under the screw terminals in lieu of making a pigtail and splicing the line/load/recept with a wire nut in the box.

I have a friend, who I have relied on for code knowledge many times, as he is rather well versed with the NEC. In passing while working together, he mentions to me that splicing in this manner is in fact a code violation, and that the NEC does not allow a splice to be made by utilizing the receptacle screw terminals. ..

I had never heard this before, so of course, I questioned it.

.. and now I can't find it anywhere in the NEC.

The closest thing I can find is the code stating that only one wire shall be placed on a screw terminal (No double-landing..), which, we all know is bad ju-ju.

Has anyone else heard this / have a code reference for it??
