The equipment grounding conductor must be bonded to the box and not rely on the device for the bonding connection. (See 250.148(B))

but what is a self grounding gfi outlet is use as per 250.146 D



Self grounding will have a tension piece where the mounting screw penatrates the yoke instead of an insulator. The insulator can be removed and perform the same function

That section permits self grounding GFCI receptacles to be used without a bonding jumper between the receptacle and the metal box.

The metal box must always be bonded to the equipment grounding conductor directly and not through a device such as a receptacle.

Again I will reference 250.148 and specifically 250.148(B) for grounding continuity.
