2011 NEC requires tamper resistant (TR) receptacles in Guest Rooms.

Guest Room. An accommodation combining living, sleeping, sanitary, and storage facilities within a compartment.

Nursing home and assisted living bedrooms have:
  • A chair, a table and a TV for living.
  • A bed for sleeping.
  • A bathroom for sanitary needs.
  • A closet for storage.
However, NEC Article 517 and NFPA 99 do not require TR receptacles for nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Do bedrooms in nursing homes and assisted living facilities require TR receptacles?

Are bedrooms in nursing homes and assisted living facilities Guest Rooms requiring TR receptacles?

Based on 406.13, I'd say yes, TR receptacles are required.

Now we get into definitions again. Is a nursing home/assisted living center a health care facility? The OP was asking about a bedroom.

NEC 517.2 Definitions.
Health Care Facilities.
Buildings or portions of buildings in which medical, dental, psychiatric, nursing, obstetrical, or surgical care are provided. Health care facilities include, but are not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, limited care facilities, clinics, medical and dental offices, ambulatory care centers, whether permanent or movable.

Is 406.13 Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Guest Rooms and Guest Suites also applicable to acute hospital patient rooms?

No. The point of "tamper resistant" recepticals is to make the receptical area safe for children where they would be present. Residences, hotels, guest rooms, pediatric wards in health care facillities kids would be present in each scenario. That is not to say that you can not use them in other applications.

I agree with you that is likely the CMP intent, however as worded I'm not so certain a typical "resident room" in a nursing home or assisted living facility doesn't meet the definition of guest room or guest suite as defined in art 100.

Guest Room. An accommodation combining living, sleeping, sanitary, and storage facilities within a compartment.

Guest Suite. An accommodation with two or more contiguous rooms comprising a compartment, with or without doors between such rooms, that provides living, sleeping, sanitary, and storage facilities.

517.10(B)(2) excludes many resident rooms in nursing homes from needing to comply with 517 if they are used exclusively as patient sleeping rooms, but I could still see them as "Guest rooms".

Assisted living facilities often do contain "dwelling units" and if so TR is required as well as AFCI, 210.52 dwelling requirements, etc.

NEC 406.13 Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Guest Rooms and Guest Suites combined with the NEC definition of a Guest Room seem remarkably broad.

I do not know or for that matter care much about the committee's intent. But, the scope of the written code may be quite extensive.

If a room anywhere has a bed, a bath and a dresser; it is probably required to have TR receptacles!

It may or may not be the CMP intent, but is the way it is written.
