Just getting your opinions on this to settle a difference of opinion. I am going to replace a 200 amp main circuit breaker panel that was damaged due to flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy. The orignal panel was originally installed low to the floor. I am going to install the new panel at the proper height. Since its in the same wall cavity, I would like to run a piece of 4/O service entrance cable from the back of the meter into the new panel ( a piece aboout 6ft long). Am I allowed to do this? Any comments are appricated.

Code does not indicate a specific length. Allowable is up to your local AHJ. Best answer would could from them.

I agree with Gus. There are many amendments to this rule in different areas. The nec simply states as near as possible to where the conductors enter the building. Some areas require a disco before you enter the building while others will give an actually distance.

Will you be able to bend SE into the back of this panel? If it's a typical studed wall 3.5" deep that may not be possible. Can't you just come in the top of the panel?

Edit: I think I am reading it wrong, you want to come out of the back of the meter? That too may be difficult. The bend radius on 4/0 SE isn't very good :D

And, I guess with this 100-year storm, many amendments are in the pipeline.

Adversity defines or reveals us and a storm/earthquake/etc. reveals code defects/shortcomings/lack of foresight.
