dimming and control of LED cable strip

I have a custom home where a customer wanted his single step into a sunken living room lit, controlled by a motion sensor (He only wanted it on at night when someone would walk into the hallway, so they didn't step off the edge of the stair. I purchased a 25 ft, 30 led kit from econolight.

Come to find out, the dimmer supplied with the kit isn't a standard dimmer, but an in line dimmer. It loses its setting as soon as it loses power. It also doesn't fit into a switch box, but is plugged into the system.

The lighting is way to bright without the dimmer, and econolight states you must use their dimmer.

I was thinking of just putting an old fashioned rheostat type dimmer on the load side of the transformer, or just experimenting with various types of dimmers on the line side of the transformer.

Attached is a photo of the transformer unit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The output of that power supply is 24V DC. You can't dim that with a standard AC dimmer. I would either replace it with a power supply that has dimming control (often 0-10v dimming) or using a PWM dimmer (such as Osram's OT-DIM) after the power supply.
