Equipment. A general term, including fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires, apparatus, machinery, and the like used as a part of, or in connection with, an electrical installation.

Dumb question: Is a wiring method (ie AC, MC, NM, EMT, etc) equipment?

110.11 would seem to support that conclusion:

110.11 Deteriorating Agents. Unless identified for use in the operating environment, no conductors or equipment shall be located in damp or wet locations; where exposed to gases, fumes, vapors, liquids, or other agents that have a deteriorating effect on the conductors or equipment; or where exposed to excessive temperatures.

Anything that disagrees with that conclusion?

IMO, I don't think that emt, etc is equipment. Reading that definition closely it seems to means all the parts of an apparatus, etc that connect to the electrical installation. The installation is the EMT, etc.

I just stumbled across this gem, looking for something else:

From the 1996 ROP:
Proposal 1-122 regarding 110.12
Panel Statement: The term "equipment" includes raceways, cables and conductors named in the proposal.

There you go hurling aspersions on my character again.

Actually, I wasn't sure. I am going from the beginning of the NEC prepping a class, so I was wondering if 110.3 had any impact on Chapter 3 Wiring Methods. I didn't see that Panel Statement until I had reached 110.12. :)

So, has the NEC changed? Have the CMPs changed? Has their statement changed you? :)

I still feel that that emt is not equipment. I can't argue with the writers but it seems a stretch to include it. I think of equipment as the object being wired not the actual wiring.

I came into it with the opposite assumption - that everything is equipment. The 110.11 wording changed my mind, but now I'm not sure. :eek:hmy:
Sure it is wiring equipment. But it is wiring equipment that has a name, a definition, and usually a listing. So we save the term "wiring equipment" for everything else.

Yes, no, maybe? Anybody agree?

The art 100 definition of equipment is very general and is worded in a way that it includes anything and excludes nothing. Kind of a refinement of the definition found in a dictionary with a few specific examples that relate to electrical installations instead of just general examples that fit any use.

By including additional modifying words like service equipment or utilization equipment we get a more specific meaning and use of the word.
