I do some PLC control that really are pretty basic programs. I do consider myself a beginner, especially when I visit a forum dedicated to it.

Last fall we did a pretty simple existing grain system with the owner and operator telling us what they would like. The owners comment of "ideally I would like..." pushed us from simple interlock of starters to something more fun with a small plc with small HMI. Both around $300 each. To shorten the story the owner had opted for a nicer HMI to be installed later. Add a $1700 HMI some hours programming and we have a pretty impressed duo complete with email and or text messaging. We put a ball gown on a pig but it sure works. Fun.

So now, the farmer will get an e-mail on his new fangled phone telling him silo 1 is full?

Something between the two. Automated transfer of storage to overhead holding bins for truck loadout the following day. As one storage bin empties the next comes online to continue the process until 1,2 or 3 overheads are filled. Certain steps are logged but not alarmed unless out of the ordinary. Undercurrent, extended over current, and locked rotor cause shutdown of all three motors. Yup, 3.:happyyes: They have not opted for grain temperature monitoring or other niceties such as the actual internet connection, yet. Option is there.

Farming income has been good the last couple years.

Which brand PLC do you use?
