Howdy Folks -

An existing primary fed 4.16kV service supplying multiple buildings in a campus setting.

One new load (a large motor) is being installed at a unique location not next to, or near, any if the existing buildings.

Two choices
1. Extend the primary and buy a new switch and xfmr. $$$ due to 100's of feet separation.
2. Install a new service into the PROPERTY straight from the utility. $ Due to relative short distance from utility to new 480v motor load.

Is this a 230.2 issue?

"Different Characteristics. Additional services shall be permitted for different voltages"

I favor the 2. to save $$

What say you?

How much is POCO going to charge you vs your needed equipment to supply from existing 4.16kV, plus monthly charges down the road for a separate service? Somebody has to buy a transformer, and some gear and POCO will not likely do so for nothing. Cable is probably not just too expensive compared to some of the other needed equipment.

along with what kwired said, I would get a complete understanding of POCO charges both for the installation and usage and DEMAND and power-factor charges for the load. You may find the upfront cost of connecting to the existing system will be offset in a reasonable amount of time.
