Citing 2008 NEC requirements

It is almost 2014. The 2014 NEC is available. The 2011 NEC has been out since, well, 2011. Why, then, do I so often see recent posts referencing the 2008 NEC? Seems like that should be on a shelf somewhere with all the other used code books.Just sayin'.

Many areas are still under earlier codes, I think some may still be using 2002 or earlier. Just because the NFPA has produced a new NEC doesn't mean it's has been adopted.

The State of Wisconsin will be adopting the 2011 NEC just this fall.

Among other things, the phase out of NEC Plus is going to allow NFPA to make some money selling hard copy and ebook versions of older codes to people who did not buy them before but still have to use them.

The NEC is simply a standard. It's up to different jurisdictions to decide on what they want to adopt as law. Some adopt the NEC verbatim, others adopt most of it and add their own amendments. There may even be jurisdictions that do not adopt it at all and write their own code instead. A decade ago NYC had it's own written and adopted electrical code.

It's all about politics. You have the insurance lobby who is corrupt as hell (read that organized crime/ mafia) and the development & construction industry who not only contributes to campaigns, but often politicians are the developers. Developers want no regulation. Insurance wants to not pay claims but when it's time to set their rates they want you to believe they're a penny from insolvency because they hide all the money.

Many locations still have no building department, no building code, no building permit.

There is an ongoing thread here {http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=155693} discussing the NFPA's response to the claim that they have no right to copyright their products. Feel free to add your comments there.

Ultimately the courts will decide who owns what and until then it's the position of this Forum that all links to free versions of currently copyrighted material be removed.
