I was told that it is now NEC code that all branch circuits must have separate neutrals or handle ties on the breakers. Is this correct? Thanks

"multiwire branch circuits" must have the handle ties, where in the past they did not always need to.
But each circuit (including MWBC's) still each needs its own neutral conductor. I think there was some change in 2011 that clarified this even more regarding MWBC's, but really did not change what most people were doing.
Before that change there may have been some justification to running a large neutral conductor and sharing it with several branch circuits, but most cases you could still find something that prohibited doing so.
