I just quoted a 300X1200 building this week and found the other bidder quoted 5 different service entrances. Were is the exception in the code that allows him to build it that way?

where is there a requirement not to have 5 service entrances?

I am not sure just what you are asking. are you saying he is going to have 5 service entrance rated devices in parallel in lieu of a single larger one? that would appear to be acceptable.

Done all the time, simply needs to meet UBC separate occupancy rules.

e.G - habitat house I helped wire last year has 5 units, each separated by fire wall. 5 separate services. Was easiest to have a multiple meter base with 5 meters, but was 5 services. Nothing to prevent 5 separate service drops to separate occupancies though.

e.G 2, built a connecting shop at son's house, separate service, no problem with inspector or poco.

It's a design build job. He quoted three 1200a services on one side of the building and two 1200a services on the opposite side of the building. He wants the owner to get the power company to feed these services with 5 different pad mounted transformers.

The owner would need to see what POCO would charge for that when evaluating bids using different designs.

is the POCO willing to do that?

the code is pretty clear that short of a few exceptions you get one service per building.

a single huge service like would be required here is one of the exceptions.
