Ive spent the last hour reading old posts on the subject

...and so it seems to me that with most portables having the neutral bonded, interlock kits on your main panel are a clear violation.

...and yet that is what most installs consist of.

what am I missing?

As long as the neutral is not bonded on the genny it's not a violation. That's all there is to it.

what I don't get is now that all portable generators are supposed to have a bonded neutral, how can an interlock be compliant

I guess that is why the generator manufacturers that have the N-G bond (most), should have instructions on how to remove them.
