White conductor on a 208V ckt

Is a white conductor permitted to be used on a 208V ckt? Am I permitted to use 12/2 MC cable w/ black & white conductors or do I need to use 12/3 MC cable w/ black, red & white conductors and cut off the white?

You just have to re-identifie them other than white.
