2014 NEC 695.6(D) says " Electrical connections at (fire pump) motor terminal boxes shall be made with a listed means of connection. Twist-on, insulation piercing and soldered wire connectors shall not be permitted to be used for this purpose."

Anyone know what a "listed means of connection" is? I googled it, but nothing came up. (Geez - if soldering is not acceptable, what is???)

Here's a comment from the ROPs
13-71 Log #1529 NEC-P13 Final Action: Accept
(695.6(D))
________________________________________________________________
Submitter: Vince Baclawski, National Electrical Manufacturers Association
(NEMA)
Recommendation: Revise to read as follows:
695.6 (D) Pump Wiring. All wiring from the controllers to the pump motors
shall be in rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, electrical metallic
tubing, liquidtight flexible metal conduit, or liquidtight flexible nonmetallic
conduit Type LFNC-B, listed Type MC cable with an impervious covering, or
Type MI cable. Electrical connections at motor terminal boxes shall be made
with a listed means of connection. Twist-on, insulation-piercing?type and
soldered wire connectors shall not be permitted to be used for this purpose.
Substantiation: Twist-on, insulation-piercing and soldered connectors have
been shown to vibrate loose from motor vibration and thus become a source of
failures. Para. 13.5.9.2 of NFPA 79 already prohibits their use.

Thanks, and thanks for the ROP comments.

Seriously? soldered connections have come loose due to vibration? I sort of suspected this new-in-2014 requirement was from the manufacturers....in this case, NEMA.

We've used these but there has been some debate as to whether or not the motor leads are considered extra fine stranded.

We use the same Infinity. I know Polaris makes a gray insulated tap for fine stranded but our shop has yet to use one. We've used tons of those black Polaris taps as well as Burndy's on motors up to 500HP with no issues so far.

How about good 'ol split bolts? Some seem to think they are "old school" or even hack, but they would meet the requirements and would work just fine if properly applied.

That may work if you only had two conductors to connect together at each splice.
