Would a massage/physical therapy business be considered any kind of special occupancy? there are individual rooms for massage/therapy...like an exam room etc. and be required to meet the NEC requirements accordingly??

I'd say it depends on what level, if any, health care licensing they have.

And if it is considered healthcare, it may not be healthcare covered by art 517 if there are no invasive procedures performed.

just FYI...called the AHJ and it was explained that if it's simply massage with no licensing requirement it's a typical occupancy...if it were chiropractic at all they would consider it as part of NEC 517.

Health Care Facilities. Buildings or portions of buildings in which medical, dental, psychiatric, nursing, obstetrical, or surgical care are provided. Health care facilities include, but are not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, limited care facilities, clinics, medical and dental offices, and ambulatory care centers, whether permanent or movable.

Physical therapy facilities would be in the same catagory as chiropractors IMO. The key wording in the definition " Buildings or portions of buildings " might be more explicid on wiring method to be used. Some portions of the facility may not apply.

What NEC does not define is just how limited the care needs to be before it is not considered a HCF.

Massage therapy may have some health benefits, but is it "health care" on a similar level as places that provide some internal procedures no matter how minor they may be?

Another example is many pharmacies are now offering flu shots, or other similar procedures - never seen one yet that has a area wired with art 517 being considered for these procedures. Is that health care or not? I say it is, but is it art 517 health care?

something to think about...Do they accept health care insurance as payment......? Would (or should) that then make them, or that area, considered a health care facility (area)?
Do pharmacies accept health care insurance as payment? Does that make them a health care facility?

I think insurance is the business side of health care and has nothing to do with care when it comes to electrical, life safety, building or other hospital codes.

If a patient has no insurance does that mean we can treat them in areas that don't comply with the mentioned codes?:ashamed:

Some insurance covers chiropractic and acupuncture, some does not.
Does the classification of the occupancy change with each patient?
It does offer some general guidelines to start from though.

The type of occupancy for any type business shall be determined by the Building Code.
See Section 301 & 302 in the IBC [ `12 IBC ] for the occupancy types.

Start with the Building Code first, then apply the other applicable codes & standards. ;)
