Is it legal to have a 20A and a 30A receptacle wired on one 20A branch circuit? The equipment I need to connect is rated only 15A, but one version has a 5-20 plug and another version has L5-30. We need to be able to plug in either type (one at a time). The wording in 220.21(B)(3) seems unclear as to whether this would be allowed.
Thanks,
Alan

I think you meant 210.21(B)(3). I think the wording is clear enough. You have a 20 amp circuit. You can use a 15 amp receptacle or a 20 amp receptacle, but there are no other choices. You cannot put a 30 amp receptacle on this circuit.

Thanks. Yes 210.21(B)(3).

If you had only a single 30 amp receptacle on a 20 amp circuit it would be code compliant.

Which, under (B)(1) would allow the OP to have a single 30A receptacle on one 20A circuit and as many 20A receptacles as he wants on a different 20A circuit, just not both 30A and 20A on one circuit, even if only one of the two would ever be used at one time.
Yes, adapter time, and it could either be a 20 to 30 adapter or a 30 to 20 adapter. :)
