I switched to Quickbooks online last week. It is different and will take some time to learn.
I switched because occasionally I have had computer problems and while my laptop was in the shop I was without Quickbooks. With the new system I am able to access QB from any computer.
The pricing is similar since I had been paying for online backup and service.

Has anyone else made the switch?

Microsoft Office has the online thing going also. My sister works there so I pay $25 a year and it keeps it up to date

The cloud is the future.

The cloud is the future.

Everything is moving to the cloud and QB is doing the same. If you go to their website you will see that it is difficult to find the desktop software. They are steering people to the cloud. The online version is similar to the desktop. With an Ipad in the truck it is possible to go directly to the web and conduct business. There is no need for an app.

Last we checked it was either the office or a remote, not both. Things may have changed since then.

Dennis if you are paying $25 for Office online you are getting ripped off. Office online is free! Office online is cloud based similar to QB online.

If you have Office 365 then you are getting a good deal. With Office 365 you still have the same Office software installed on your system as you normally would, its not cloud based. The difference is you pay a yearly fee to always have the newest version and you get free access to up to 20GB of online storage.

QB online is cloud based so you don't actually install QB on you computer. I considered going to QB online a couple years ago but when talking to Intuit they told me I can't import IIf files into the online version. My 2 primary supply houses invoice me using IIF files so they import directly into QB. If I loose the ability to import IIF files I have to enter each invoice manually. I don't really need remote access to QB so I prefer to stay with the local/desktop version.

Greg,

My office has started 2014 in Quickbooks Online. It is not as fully functioning as other accounting systems -- especially in the reporting areas.

However, its Business and Class categorization can easily be used for profit centers. It still works for per job billing. You'll still have enough control if you use cost accounting to charge back your back office (or at least track profitability) for commercial projects.

It doesn't matter so much which accounting package you use, as long as you use one the right way.

My bookkeeper and CPA access the Quickbooks Online without all the file transfer hassles of the past. It does get slow sometimes, but I can access it from anywhere.

You should be able to have your sales team in the field setting up numbers, or entering time, but there are better models for scaling that kind of back office.

It's easy enough to setup import/export of supplier details, invoices, or credits -- however, Quickbooks Online is challenged in that area without a data person to help you out. Best news is there is no server to manage, no backups to worry about, and I can get my numbers anywhere.

Best,

Justin
