Anyone know what these wires are for?

Quassy 038.jpgThey
were in a HO yard, about 18"deep. They are about the size of cable (rg6) just rubber coated and the skinned one looks to be about a solid #12. No power on them. They seem to be heading into the front yard.

My guess is an invisible dog fence.

Could be but that would be way too deep. My invisible fence is about 4 inches deep. manual calls for 2-6 inches of depth. and a 18-22 gauge is all that is needed for this as well. could it be to some old light in the front yard that has been removed? flag light?

LV lighting? Except it's too deep.

No abrasion protection on the insulation?

That's the way my farmer-dad would have wired up a well pump. Though he, at least, would have used something with abrasion resistance. But then, on a well pump, why wouldn't you bury it with the piping?

Someone stealing power?

they look vaguely similar to some cable TV wiring I have seen. not the stuff at the HO end, but the stuff on the utility side.

Looks very much like direct burial electric fence wire I buy (I put it in black poly pipe, but it isn't necessary). The kind you use to keep horses and other animals in or out.

Thanks guys, I am going to check something else, maybe you know about this. Around here for city water most people have a meter in the basement and some bell wire to an outside reader, but there are some meters in some areas out in the yard. Maybe it could have to do with that.

Is there an irrigation system? I've seen folks use single conductors for solenoid valves.

any wire markings? annealed or hard copper solid? is it stranded? is it AL wire?

I have seen conductors like that that pre-date UF cable. I once repaired a few of those that still had the words "direct burial" visible.

Single-conductor UF is pretty common for irrigation control, especially golf courses. It gets really fun when a backhoe goes through a bundle of 30-odd wires and they're all the same color...

Though I have also seen some wired with the whole rainbow, including purple conductors:

This type of wire is commonly run for " rainbird " type systems.
Always solid core.
