Business partner

$5 million sounds like a lot, but if the business never made any money, what good is that experience to you?
That is a good point. This trade can go through large amounts of cash in a short time as associated materials, equipment, overhead costs, labor are all expensive, but how much profit is there at the end is the main number that counts. Some people may be good at managing a project, but not managing the business in general. Some could be the other way around.

the tax returns of the business would probably make for a better reference than anyone she would suggest you call.

there are a lot of small businesses ($5 million is pretty small in the grand scheme of things) where the owner is making less on a net basis than he or she could just working for someone else.

Thanks guys, I have food for thought. I thought a partner would give me something that I feel that I'm lacking. Nobody cares about my business except me. I just thought that it would be nice to be able to discuss projects, problems, success, with someone who has been there and done that. She ran a 5 million a year business for a long time with very good success and references to back it up. I might be dreaming though, I dislike most women for all the same reasons most men do. I have not done anything yet, so don't worry. I really appreciate the feedback.

Do you have a local EC association? I joined mine maybe 5 years ago and have made some good contacts/friends. We generally don't look at each other as competition, more like colleagues. It's nice when you can call a couple of colleagues to see if they have some obscure breaker kicking around that you need in a pinch (and vice-versa). We talk about business, projects, codes, etc.

This forum has also been phenomenal for me in taking care of a lot of what you're feeling you lack.

To add to mjf's post: Twenty years ago we had SCORE. Service Core of Retired Executives. A group of retired business people that would provide assistance-guidance to business owners.

If you want to bounce things off her and get her perspective buy her lunch. Don't make her a parnter.
