What is the required height of an electrical disconnect? It is for mini-split A/C unit on the loading dock of a facility on a Naval installation. Are there any exceptions to the height restriction and if so what are they? Thanks.

Your answer lies in article 440.14 and in the article 100 definition of "readily accessible." The disconnecting means for the A/C equipment must be within sight and readily accessible. Generally, that means you have to be able to reach it for operation without having to use a tool or a ladder or to have to climb over obstacles. There are two exceptions, but it is best if you read those yourself. Please note that this rule does not establish a minimum or maximum height.

I don't have a code book nearby, but I thought "readily accessible" was a maximum of 6ft 7inches to switch handle in highest position.

The 6' - 7" rule only applies to overcurrent protection - NEC 240.24(A). This discussion is about a disconnecting means in an application that does not require overcurrent protection.

"Readily Accessible" is defined as "Capable of being reached quickly for operation, renewal, or inspection without requiring those to whom ready access is requisite to actions such as to use tools, to climb over or remove obstacles, or to resort to portable ladders, and so forth."

404.8 has the 6'-7" limit applying to switches too.

It also allows use of portable means of access if it is adjacent to the equipment.
