I am under the impression that the room smoke detectors can be residential style, with 120V back-up but that they need to notify the front desk. I am in Indiana. NFPA 72, 2010 and NEC 2008 are applicable.

1. I would prefer to have the residential style detectors so burnt popcorn in the microwave doesn't evacuate the hotel. If I do this, may I use a single 120V circuit for the whole floor?

2. What is the usual way for notifying the front desk? Is this a general requirement or just a regional one? Sounds like a good idea either way.

Thank you.

You want to read 2010 NFPA 72 article 23.8.3 Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems Interconnectedwith Dwelling Unit Fire Warning Equipment. Particularly these articles:

23.8.3.2 The status of dwelling unit smoke alarms shall be permitted to be displayed at the protected premises control unit
and annunciators.

23.8.3.5 An alarm condition occurring at the dwelling unit fire warning system or the operation of any test switches provided as
part of the dwelling unit fire warning equipment shall not cause an alarm condition at the protected premises fire alarm system.
