320A 3 ph meters are rated 400A non-continuous - correct?
If so it would be nice if the manufacturer's literature said as much.

I have not used a 320 amp 3 phase unit but the single phase 320 amp meters are rated 400 continuous and there uis documentation of that. Did you look inside the meter and read the info? I am sure the manufacturer has something on it somewhere

Got a particular manufacturer in mind that maybe failed to do so?

I just looked in a Milbank catalog, top of first page of the 320 amp section has in fairly large print "400 AMP MAX 320 AMP CONTINUOUS"

Our POCO's over here make us use a CT can for anything bigger than 200A or 125HP.

125 HP probably being @ 480 volts?

otherwise NEC FLC of a 125 @ 208 volts is 359A. Not something you see on the farms or even light industries around here, but someone probably has a 125 hp motor somewhere on a 208 or 240 volt system.

Single phase and 3 phase Class 320 meters are built for a 400A meter socket, which is rated at 80%, thus 320A continuous. The service is still called 400A. Meter manufacturers came out with them a few years ago, but most utilities (including ours) still require CT's if over 200A 3 phase. We still use CT's because we can use one Class 20 meter for any size service by changing CT's. Cuts down on inventory.

How long ago do you call a few years ago? I'm getting close to 30 years in the trade and they have been around all of that time and probably at least 10 years or more before then, now if we lived as long as the early biblical people did maybe that was just a few years ago;)
