Yep, you are to provide your own drop wire to grid to support your cables to.

And paint them of flag them to show they are not part of the ceiling grid system.

Painting them orange is the norm here otherwise the ceiling guys can say we're using theirs. So it's to cover your butt

In NY State, we are still on the 2008 NEC.
But...we are heading to the 2014 very soon (months).
I asked where it states the identification requirements. Well they have changed since the '08.
In the 2011 edition of the NEC, 300.11(A)(1) & (2) both now require identification of the support wires that are installed in addition to the ceiling support wires.
Lots to learn for us guys coming from the Stone Age of the '08........ YIKES
