In article 392.9 (3) and table column 2
Is this calculation for cable below 4/0 down to 1/0?
or can you put cables smaller than 1/0 without a barrier?

392.9(a) Column 2

392.9(a) Column 2

Is this calculation to determine the available space for just cable sizes below 4/0 to 1/0?
or can you put cable smaller than 1/0. Also this section is for multi conductors only.
you cant put single conductor in the tray without a barrier to keep the multi conductor from
spilling over on top the single conductors?

What Code are you looking at???

There is no 392.9.

Do you mean 392.22(A)?

Column 2 of Table 392.22(A) is for where 4/0 and larger cables are installed in the same tray as smaller than 4/0.

392.22

Sorry the 2005 code was 392.9

So the question is why the calc for cable smaller then 4/0? Why not just use diameters of cables if there all single layer.
Can you put smaller then 1/0 in the same tray? Or is a barrier needed to do so?

Only 4/0 and larger are single layer and no other cables on top of them. Smaller than 4/0 do not have to be in a single layer. No barrier is required, at least not for conductor size differences.
