I'm designing how to bring power to a series of heated panels on the intake of an AHU; it's a snowmelt system. Each panel has a screw in terminal with a whip to which I'm going to connect a fitting for converting to a flxible cord. The flexible cord will have a NEMA 5-20L twist lock plug on it and of course go to a nearby NEMA 5-20L receptacle in a weather proof enclosure.

My question is what should I specify for the cable. It will be completely exposed to the elements all winter long.

Would you be allowed to use flex cord here at all (substitute for fixed wiring)? My go-to cord for things like this is the Carol Super VuTron SOOW style. Never tried the stuff in a northern winter, though.

Reconfiguring or not following installation instructions of a listed unit will make it a non compliant installation. or Are you trying to design something for a NRTL to list? The NEC has a table on cords & applications for you to determine which is best.

good down to -40C/F (they are the same at that degree - I didn't know that). In any event it doesn't get THAT cold up here.

not reconfiguring anything. These are removable panels. Have to be able to remove them in the summer.
