the only thing i run on osx that is problematic is microsoft
office for mac, and it's the biggest POS i've ever seen....

Which version are you using?

I'm thinking about switching to mac and i was reading recently that the new version of office for mac is supposedly top notch. I was thinking i could just use something like Parallels to run this Conest software.

win 8 runs most anything earlier versions run, just the top layer is different, but it can be tweaked or even mostly disabled.

I wouldn't buy a windows 8 computer.
I went to Dell and got a win 7 laptop.
Dell still sells win 7.

Thanks for the heads up on Win10.

I agree 100% on your Win8 statement. It's not a tool to do work. It's a kids toy for little 8 year old girls to share butterfly photos with grandma just like modern phones.

I hope Microsoft realizes they need to get back to getting work done before they lose a very significant market share.
have a look at a start menu replacement like classicshell or start menu 8 by iobit (my choice)

it will also let you completely disable metro if you want to

FWIW, word has it that Microsoft will be providing a free "upgrade" to Windows 10 for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 when it gets released in Q3 2015.

Even before having win 8 I typically navigated via toolbars I placed on the desktop taskbar. By setting win 8 to run in desktop mode not much has really changed for me. Just having a "desktop" toolbar on the taskbar allows you to navigate to almost anything, but you may want another folder or two either on your desktop or linked to a toolbar with nothing but shortcuts for even faster navigation to things you use the most.

i just loaded parallels on my new little macbook, and put windows 10 on it.

it feels sorta dirty now... i've just got a very pissy attitude about
windows, and the entire microsoft happy world, since i jumped ship.
hell, i never even did run windows 8.

i'll load up some proggies over the weekend, and see how it does,
but i'm gonna guess it'll work pretty well. it's interesting however,
that parallels goes far out of it's way to make the entire windows
thing look and feel as much like OSX as they can.

If you can wait a few more months, Windows 10 will be out. I played around with that some during the testing stage and it seemed a lot more user friendly than 8.1. I was pretty much able to jump right in a find my way around which wasn't possible on my wife's 8.1 computer. They will also be offering a free upgrade from 7 and 8.1 to 10 for anyone who purchased within (I think...) the year prior to the new system's release.

I have to agree with you PetrosA. I downloaded the Windows 10 Enterprise technical preview and I have to admit it is much more user friendly than either of the 8's. And is it just me, or is it faster too?

ill be honest ive always hit "win key" then typed the name of the program i want in vista/7 etc

i never use shortcuts for programs anymore, why do you need them if there in the startmenu and you know the name of the program?

Let's see... at least three key presses, likely more, versus one click, perhaps two (and one hand is already on the mouse).

It's a matter of expediency IMO.

When something works and you are used to it why change:p

Besides most computers I have had have programs I either don't use or seldom use - I only put shortcuts for programs/files I use frequently, other then the "desktop toolbar" which in a way is a short cut to everything on the computer.
