Im going to look at a fish pond pump GFCI the GFCI keeps tripping some times it takes days other times weeks. Anyway I am going to look for the obvious things like raintite seals and such but would like ideas on pump motor brands that have a history of failing and would you think a GFCI breaker would be a better way to go instead of the GFCI receptacle. This is hard to install wiring and say it wont trip again because there are so many variables. Has anybody dealt with a situation like this before.

Thanx in advance.

I would think if the pump motor is bad it would trip instantly, or at least not intermittently. Maybe the GFCI outlet doesnt have a bubble cover or isnt a WR GFCI. Could be other outlets on the circuit getting wet causing trips as well.

We use a half dozen small sump pumps in our facility, and they fail by getting water in them. The resistance can get so the ground fault current is real close to tripping the gfci, and then small changes in temp. etc and send it over the edge. If you have an ohm meter that goes up to 6 meg ohm or more, it should show no readable value.

Yes, a good meter or better yet a Meger.

I helped a young competitor with a service call last week, he knew he needed help and asked. His amp clamp with basically a continuity tester was just not up to the task. Doesn't matter whose name is on the case. That and a bit more experience.
