can light in closet

the can light must be 6 inches from the closet storage space in a closet. the shelf is 10 inches wide.
so should it be 12+6=18 inches from wall -measured on the ceiling?​

Almost. Look at 410.2 for the definition of storage space.

12" or the width of the shelf, whichever is greater.

I agree that 12" is the width unless the shelf is larger however the can light must have a totally enclosed trim.
