Installed in same acoustical ceiling. I was discussing this with an electrician yesterday and he said the downlight takes more time than the 2x2 light(which is bigger). I disagree...the 2x2 would take longer. Not including any aircraft cable supports etc....just basics clips. Guess cutting the hole for the downlight makes it longer.

lay the 2x2 in, presuming it has fast clips like other "troffers" commonly have you just bend them over and it is done.

the downlight needs to be measured/positioned, hole cut and secured. Securing may or may not be quick and simple depends on luminaire design.

Both need wired in some way, that can be same for each or it can be different.

If additional structural support is needed it is probably needed for either luminaire. NEC basically says the grid can be the support as long as it is supported at regular intervals.

By that way of thinking a 4x2 trouffer would take even longer than the 2x2. I agree with the electrician.

That may depend if existing tiles are 4x2 or 2x2. Same with the 2x2 troffer.

New construction hopefully those hanging the ceiling leave right size hole for you and only reason 2x4 may take longer is they are larger/heavier, but it may take more 2x2's to light same space also.

You have zero experience installing either so why on earth would you even begin to question those that do?

The can light takes longer in most cases.
