DVI cable run in the wall

Between an X-Ray room and it's control room, there is the need to run a DVI cable from the boom to the control room. The conduit we specified (based on input from the vendor) is 1 1/4 but needs to be at least 2 inch in order to pull those pesky connectors on the end of the cable.

Because the space is finished, they want to avoid opening walls and would like instead to run the cable in the plenum and down the wall in the control room; i.e. a ring and a string type arrangement.

So long as the cable is plenum rated I don't see a problem with it. I am only hesitant because unlike other cables we run in this way, the cable won't be terminated at the wall such as you'd do with an Ethernet cable.

Do I have reason to be concerned?

Be ready for some sticker shock for a plenum rated DVI cable. You can get face plates for this if you are concerned. If your run is over 15 or 20' the resolution is going to start to degrade but if they know what they want, there is not much can be done.

The first one looks great, but is Single DVI only.
The second one can be used for either single or dual signal, but my gut feeling is that the reflections from impedance lumps at the termination could really bite you, especially for high resolution (high frequency) video.

I do not honestly know how hard it would be to solder up a DVI cable, nor what sort of control is necessary to maintain proper impedance matching at the ends.

Finding DVI connectors was strangely difficult, compared to finding things like serial cable connectors and the like.

Based on experience soldering DB-15 connectors trying to build my own VGA cable, it is difficult and very lossy. I think there is a way to crimp the pin and snap it into the connector like a Molex termination but that would likely be even more lossy.

You start with a runner cable that has a bullet cap that is a little larger than the cable and can be pulled places that you can't pull with a preterminated end.

The ends are a plug that uses several different configurations of breakout ends.

I would use this, or a DVI over cat6 balun.

winnie beat me to the EasyPull product line.

Another vote here for a DVI to Cat5/6 or Fiber extender. They also make them with embedded audio and USB if that's needed at all (Look up KVM Extenders).

Or pull an HDMI cable and use HDMI to DVI adaptors?
