A seemingly common question in this area is how close can it be to the tub?

The answer is it can not be within the "tub" or a shower space. It can be immediately adjacent to that space though. Another common debate however is on exactly where that line is located.

Or does it need to be for wet location?

We simply don't know- the op hasn't made an appearance since yesterday. Forum was down for a long time.

Yes wet location question would be right up there on seemingly common questions of this nature.

I haven't been on the forum for a few days - sort of out of ordinary for me but been extra busy lately.

Since the OP did not ask the questions properly I was being sarcastic.

His "light switch near bath tub" can be interpreted in many ways.

So, I assumed his question was:
Is a there rule of having a switch within 4" of the outside edge of the shower. and I answered NO:
