Above ground pool bonding

I have 2 pool installations, electrical only, and 2 different inspectors. I've dealt with one of them many times, and he is well respected and very knowledgable in his field. The other not so much. Anyway they have 2 different takes on the bonding. Both pools have completely vinyl structures and a vinyl liner. They both have a vinyl coated shell with one stainless panel for skimmer and piping. 1 inspector says to bond pool skimmer(water), to stainless, to motor lug. The other wants that plus a bonding ring around pool. Which one is correct?

How deep is the pool? Perimeter surfaces may require equipotential bonding.
 
if the pool pump has a bond lug then it is not a storable pool per NEC 690.31 that requires pool pumps to be double insulated type, the perimeter bond is required for all permanently installed pools

Curious to why the one who understood the perimeter bonding was being consider not so knowledgeable .

I make that assumption, because if you thought the perimeter bonding was requirement you would not be asking if the NEC required the perimeter bonding.

It is hard to answer questions about pools because of the term "above ground". The nec makes a distinction between storable and permanent pools. A pool that is above ground and is more than 42" deep is not considered storable and therefore, the rules of an in ground pool (permanent pool ) apply. Permanent pools need equipotential bonding while the storable pools do not.

IMO, the term storable is a bad name for some of these pools as they are not really storable but the fit the definition. Iwire has one that fits the definition of permanent but is storable....:?



Storable Swimming, Wading, or Immersion Pools; or
Storable/Portable Spas and Hot Tubs. Those that are
constructed on or above the ground and are capable of
holding water to a maximum depth of 1.0 m (42 in.), or a
pool, spa, or hot tub with nonmetallic, molded polymeric
walls or inflatable fabric walls regardless of dimension.

You would need to do a perimeter bond that encircles the pool. #8 wire installed 18-24" from the inside edge of the pool and 4-6" below subgrade-- this is true even if you just have grass. The wire returns back to the pool pump bond on the outside of the motor

Dennis what purpose would that ring actually serve? Would that be a useless bond just to meet code?

The bonding would keep the ground level at the same potential as all the pool equipment so if there were leakage =-- stray voltage perhaps- then you would not get shocked
