Are there any exceptions to needing to have a closed trim in a recessed can above a bath tub? Such as distance from fixture to tub. 12' ceilings on the one in question and standard soak tub. TIA

Yes 12' in the MBR bath and in the MBR clothes closet

See 410.10(D)
12 ft Ceilings? Must be quite a bathroom...

Yes 12' ceilings in the MBR bath and in the MBR clothes closet. Shelving in closet goes to 8'. When I see closet, I immediately think of closed trims for recessed cans, but I now think there is and exception that applies when there is 40" or more of clearance from storage to luminaire. Was wondering about any exception like that for above a bath tub deck.

Last sentence of 410.10(D): "Luminaires located within the actual outside dimension of the bathtub or shower to a height of 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower threshold shall be marked for damp locations, or marked for wet locations where subject to shower spray."

Unless subject to direct spray, they only need to be rated for damp locations - many open type trims are rated for damp locations. If over 8 feet above the top rim of tub/shower they don't even need to be damp rated.

The clothes closet - all incandescent luminaires in a clothes closet must have an enclosed lamp regardless of location, but the further restrictions are in relation to the defined "storage space" which is found in 410.2. That definition says "continuing vertically to the closet ceiling parallel to the walls" so no cut off limit for a high ceiling.

So, inside a clothes closet no open trims for 6" cans with halogen lamps....No distance above/away from storage area exceptions? Maybe time to add closed LED retrofit trims to the bid.

Correct, most instances. There are five conditions mentioned in 410.16(C), read them carefully.

The last one will let you put a surface mounted fluorescent or LED luminaire within the storage space if identified for that use.
