We have a paint booth (building) and are looking to extend it. The code is clear regarding Classifications around the doors. This is a down draft ventilated building and the air is filtered then returns to atmosphere out the openings on the side of the building. I can't find what the classification bubble would be around the exhaust openings, but surely there is one.

Any ideas?

Is this once-through ventilation, recirculating, or partial exhaust with make-up air?

NFPA 33 words areas in a paint booth as Class 1 division 1 where their is likelihood of ignitable gas or vapor under normal operating conditions so that would make that area best to consider in that classification. You can read NFPA 33 online free online from their website
