    ARC Flash Labeling requirements for Portable machinery, 240/208VAC panels

    Hi,

    We have several equipment (480vac, 30A - 80A) that are corded for the purpose of able to be moved to different location in our plant. These equipment are only moved for short time and not permanently installed. How do you place a label on a piece of equipment that could be plugged into different buses? The IE would be different at each bus.

    Also, for 240VAC/208VAC/120VAC panels, how would these be labeled? I believe the code requires them to be labeled, is there a method to calculate IE for 240/208/120vac panelboard.?

    One method, if you have had a study done, would be to label them with the worst case incident energy for any places they may be plugged into.

    The 240V panels do not meet the exemption in IEEE 1584 so would have to labeled with whatever method you are using in the facility to determine IE. The 120/208 panels could be dealt with in two ways:
    1. If they meet the exemption in IEEE 1584 they could be labeled with a default value of <1.2 cal/cm^2 to insure non melting clothing and other PPE is worn
    2. If they do not meet the exemption in IEEE 1584, then the would have to be labeled with whatever method you are using in the facility to determine IE.
