Can ceiling fan be mounted on the extension box ?

Basically this is the situation, old residential building, old wiring that is a fire hazard, the owner doesn't want to do major renovations so we going to abandon the old wiring and run new surface mounted conduits with new outlets and light fixtures i know its ugly but this is what the owner wants. Now in one of the rooms in the apartment there is a ceiling fan that is mounted to the box that is mounted to the beam in the ceiling, so can i mount an extension box to the existing box and then mount the fan on the extension ?

You can't use a standard extension box. They are not fan rated. You can use a Wiremold fan box mounted over the existing box.

    Here you go- https://www.garvinindustries.com/ele...es/54171-fannb

Mount it over the old box and run screws through the old box into the beam.

You can also use any type box and attach the fam bracket to the wood, not the box and you will be compliant.
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me
    I can't help it if I'm lucky

As Dennis stated you can just support the fan independent of the box and you can use a standard box with an extension box.

Which makes hanging the fan legal, but does not, IMHO, get you immunity from the requirement to use a fan rated box in new installations.
How this is resolved in remodel/rewire situations may depend on how your AHJ looks at it.
