    That's a building code issue, but normally if you have natural (window) ventilation, a mechanical vent would not be a requirement in a dwelling

    In my jurisdiction a fan is required regardless of window being present. Check your building code.

    In mine, the window opening has to be a minimum size or a fart fan is required.

    The ICC codes (adopted as is) only require one if there is a tub or shower.

    From what I can find in MA, section 1203.4.2.1 ventilation, it states a fan is required if there is a tub or shower.

    What contaminant sources are there in a bathroom? Are the normal things that a bath fan would vent actually contaminants?
