I have installed a number of “smart” switches in my home. I recently purchased a box of 4 three way smart switches and they came with instructions for installing 2 of them in a single 3 way circuit with two switching locations. I installed one and found that it worked fine with the original conventional 3 way left at one location. Logically, if it can be switched from any location then only one “smart” switch is all that is needed. I have another circuit that is controlled at three locations with a 4 way switch and 2 3-Way switches. Can I also use one “smart” 3 way switch along with the existing 4way and one of the existing 3way switches to control this circuit as well? Other than wanting to sell more product, I don’t see why the manufacturers claim that you need a “smart” switch at each location.
