Tanning Salons

I have been trying to find information in the NEC 2023 regarding tanning salons. I am looking at job and I am pretty certain from what I have researched that there is no demand factor that can be applied for tanning beds and I have mixed signals on if they would require GFI protection on them. Quick summary there are going to be 16 booths all 3phase anywhere from 30-60amp circuits per one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IMO, GFCI protection would not required. As far as load calculations go, I don't know. It's been many years since I wired a tanning salon.
I would be surprised if all your booths ran simultaneously.
Good luck!

My buddy owns a tanning salon. One of those beds is on a 90 amp 208 3 phase circuit. I think the rest are on like 60 circuits. But they never run all at once. Too much time cleaning, getting women in and out, undressing and dressing, and when they pee in his potted plants lmao. Lots of those fancy women are nasty.

Not sure if it matters that in reality there is load diversity. Unless there is a diversity factor or table in the NEC, you have to design it to run them all at once. One saving grace is that these should not be continuous loads. Not sure how long someone tans, but should be less than 3 hours at a shot.

I think the GFCI requirements are in 210.8(B). The answer isn't cut and dried as some 3 208V phase circuits now require GFCI up to 100A. Are these cord and plug connected or hard wired? If cord and plug it is going to matter where the receptacle is or whether it is near a sink. If these are hard wired then I don't think you need GFCI protection.

I agree with him, but there could be some limitation put in the controlling computer to limit the number of beds at one time that MIGHT satisfy the reviewer. That said, it has been 15 years since I wired one, but the biggest issue was that all the Wolff tanning beds require 220V and they clearly state that 240 or 208 will void the warranty and they claim actually not run correctly, so all the ones I installed required buck/boost transformers. Watch out.
