1/2" ground rod ??

One of my customers purchased ground rods for me to install in his pole barn service. As I looked at them I noticed they where only 1/2 inch OD. I did not put them in. I assumed that ground rods must be 5/8 OD. This is from NEC 250.52 (5) (b) but it states at the end " unless listed "

It should have a NRTL marking directly on the rod. UL is often stamped right into the metal. If they're UL listed rods.
