I have an existing condition of 14, - 1/3HP motors in a pottery class. All motors are plug and receptacle connected. The plug serves as my controller. It is being feed from 5 circuits. As this job is existing for the past 15 years, does the NEC require for these motors to be GFCI protected? A student has suggested that the motors should have GFI protection. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1/3 HP portable motor

A wet area does not constitute the need for gfi protection, the use of the receptacle does.If someone was to plug something other than the motor into the receptacle, gfi protection may be desired although not required. The code specifies where gfi protection is required, this is not one of them. Most gfi requested installs like this are a design spec, owner request, or a city inspection requirement instead of a code requirement.

Re: 1/3 HP portable motor

See 210.8(B)(3).

If the motors are located at one of the following, it is required:

Bathrooms, rooftops, kitchens.

If it is not installed in one of these three areas, it is not required by NEC (generally speaking). The fact that it might be a damp or even a wet location doesn't enter into it, as there is no requirement for GFCI's outside in commercial, which is certianly a wet location.

Re: 1/3 HP portable motor

Thanks for your replys. After reading ARTICLE 430 could you tell me how 430.44 IV Motor Branch-Circuit and Ground Fault Protection apply to my original question? Any help is appreciated.

Re: 1/3 HP portable motor

430.44 in the 02 Code is in section III Article It referes to an orderly shut down.

IV. Motor Branch-Circuit Short-Circuit and Ground-Fault Protection, 430.51 General. and 430.52 Rating or Setting for Individual Motor Circuit..

The term ground fault in this section refers to "A Fault to Ground", not GFCI or GFPE. If that is where your going???

Thanks for that reply. I would like to know how you reached that interpertation of that article.

Re: 1/3 HP portable motor

I like that interpratation of the ground fault mentioned in article 340 sounds right to me

Re: 1/3 HP portable motor

340 refers to UNDERGROUND FEEDERS and BRANCH CIRCUITS Cable UF. There is no mention of GFCI here. Please explain your thoughts on this subject.
