Is there anything that would trigger a requirement to rewire to 14-50R with installing a new range.... and should there be?

This has been an exception since 1996 nec to allow this. Only oddball ranges can't be used on grandfathered in receptacles.

No and no. If the NEC cared about retrofitting old homes, they would have mandated 6-50 instead of 14-50.

100% on 6-50 as the safe way out. Any history here? Are any of the code committees focused on retrofit safety issues? Any PI's on this topic?
