Ok, I know I am setting myself up here, but here goes!! When is a 100 amp panel to small? Any thoughts other than, "when the load is to great"!! The sitiuation.. rental house with 900 sq. ft., electric water heater, stove. Owner wants to know "what to do"? He is remodeling house. I am getting back with him Monday. I suggested panel upgrade. (200A) "More is better", "mo betta" for future upgrades. Thank you for "any" comments!

If there is a chance that this building will by upgraded, then sure, put in the 200 amp service. But I think a 200 amp service on a 900 sq ft. building is a bit ridiculous myself.

Generally speaking the vast majority of homes that size in my area have 100 amp services. It's extremely common.

100 OR 125 AMP SHOULD WORK FIND.
I have seen 100 amp breakers trip more often if they are a normal 100 amp breaker being used as a main.
For some reason when you get a panel with a 100 amp main breaker that has four connections to the bus bar instead of two. They seem to work better.

Do a load clac.

Helps sell the upgrade if it's close to overloaded.

It is kind of a borderline call to make. If there is future upgrades such as hvac/ heat strips etc. and you decide to increase panel size, with a 200a panel being priced better than a 150a, then the 200a does not then seem to large! What about suggesting a small subpanel??

Other than the NEC, is a 100 amp panel really even needed?

For the average small house, condo or apartment it's plenty big enough, that's for sure. But then again, we can't forget about all the "what if's" ;)
