i would like to get a feel for who likes 1000 foot spools for 12/2, 12/3, 10/2 and 10/3 romex versus 250 foot slinkies

PLEASE! Discuss!!!

1000' spools almost always, this includes MC.
250' if the job is smaller
1000' are much easier to pull from

I keep a 250' roll on my van for service calls and really small remodel work since they are small and easy to handle. but if I go in on a job knowing I will use any amount over 100' I bring in the 1000' spools. I don't get 1000' spools of 10 wire who would want to carry that? I don't go to a chiropractor now and don't want to have to.

In these days of wire mysteriously growing feet overnight and walking away on its own, 1000' must look tempting. OTOH - they have to work more for it compared to a more portable 250' coil.

Is anyone selling wire by the inch? I wouldn't feel so bad losing 24" of it

When i was doing houses the choice depended on how big it was and how many guys were working.Best way i found was 250 footers on a spinner.Would set up 8 of them near the panel and with 2 men pull all the HR in less than i hour. One in attic one below to point out where to drop them. With high price of copper today that would need to change. If your good at running wire there is very little waste, keep short runs of 4 to 20 feet till the end of the pulling.

I find it easier to change my setup (move the spinner) when I'm working with 250' spools. I tend to move around a lot, and spinners are quick to reposition.

And, I am a sissy.

I use 1000' spools on occasion but usually use 250' rolls on my Carlon spinner. Easier to lug around, especially on 2 story houses. It used to cost the same for 250s or 1000s by the foot until last year when the supply houses around here started charging a $7.00 spool charge for the 1000s.

250's are the way to go when you gotta short run in a occupied house.

I like to use the SJ cord to. The guy at lowes told me its way more durable and if you run out of it, you can just cut up your extension cord and use that. 8)

I use 1000' rolls in the larger houses I do. 3000 Sq. ft. or larger. When it gets below that I then use more of the 250' rolls because the rooms are smaller and the pulls aren't so long. I really don't think you can go wrong with either.

On a 2 story set it up on the ground and throw it tru a window and pull away, easy fast and no carrying.Point is this changes from building to building as to whats best.

well, personally i like SJ cord... it is, as someone stated, more durable, easier to pull thru bored holes in studs, all the conductors are insulated inside the cable, and it just plain LOOKS better!
:)

Whats nice about the sjo cord is using an extension cord, you can leave the female cap on it, and presto you have one receptacle outlet already made up for you, just dive it out of the sheetrock someplace. Make sure to drill all 1-1/2" holes thru studs and joists so it fits thru the hole. Most cords are orange, so the inspectors think its number 10 you are running. You will get a pat on the back for sure. Just don't run it near a "water source".

Funny as this is i actually seen it done.A friend was wanting to drywall his garage and did not want to wait for me to pull some romex for him.I almost could not believe this.Had he waited i would have done it free. Can only hope nothing ever happens.

I like coils for service and modest sized new homes. I will use reels for larger houses. Where do my 500' reels of 8/3 and 10/3 fit into the poll?

The bossman doesn't let me pull romex anymore. Sometimes I really miss crawling under a post n beam home in the muck and meeting up with kitty carcasses and spiders while dragging the hole-hawg behind me.

I got a few reels for the first time in decades yesterday. They are not common out here, but were a few bucks cheaper so I risked the back injury and got some into a cart. I used to think they were terrific back when I was 19 or 20.

And just wait till you gotta lug it to second floor to finish a missing run of maybe 30 feet.Waste will be just as high.
