Wow. I need to get a 200A single phase 120/240 panel out to a big garage behind a house. 1,000 feet away. General use receptacles, commercial ceiling fans and a dozen high bay lights. Total continuous about 60A. My calcs are telling me at least 500 kcmil. Am I figuring right?

It will take years to recoup the wiring cost over a new meter set in the garage. Same cost per KWH so why run the feeder?

around here, the poco doesnt give their wire or labor away for free, how much kick back do they give you for giving the work away to them?

that's not behind the house; that's down the street!

Yes, I'd see about getting 250 kV over there with a nice substation transformer next to the garage. That should take care of the voltage drop.

Do you have a budget for the project?
Think about two 500s and one 350 Al in a 4" with a couple of 2" spares for communication or whatever.
Material for feeder wire, conduit and spares would be about $7 a foot plus, your costs, including OH and profit
Then there is that 1000' trench.... 20 guys from the HD parking lot, 20 shovels. 50' for $50 $1400

I would have the POCO do it..here it would be 350.00 up front charge and it would be deducted in the monthly bills..so in essence you keep the service up and you get the 350.00 back..here the POCO is a co-op..

so your cost to install is what 3 grand or around that area maybe more..meter charge is what 20 dollars a month or 240 a year..how many years is pay back..I am sure you will get the rest of the install..So I would save the customer some cash and get their business on the rest of the job..plus they might just become a regular customer..

Does your customer really NEED 200amp, is he planning on that much expansion, with only a 60 amp load, would a 100 service be more affordable...URD?

What CSCHMID said....and no kick backs involved. When a person hires you for a job it is so you can help them get it right. It is not so you can pad the bill with unnecessary work.
