A 10kw steam shower, rated at 240 volts, was specified for an apartment. At 10kw, the load calculation exceeds the existing service for the apartment.
The apartment has a 125 amp, 120/208 volt, 3 phase, 4 wire feeder. However, connecting this 10kw load on a 208 volt panel will only draw approximately 7.5kw, since it's a resistive load, and power will be reduced by around 25%.
I have 2 questions:
1. Would the steam shower fall under section 220.53, which is the appliance load section?
2. Assuming I place it under 220.53, the section calls for the use of nameplate ratings. I'm assuming I cannot use 7.5kw in the load calculation, but only 10kw since that's the nameplate rating?
Thanks!
