110.26(F) indicates All switchboards, panelboards, distribution boards, and motor control centers shall be located in dedicated spaces and protected from damage.
Has anyone had trouble with a wall mounted individual VFD being considered similar to a MCC and requiring dedicated space by the AHJ?

If the VFD is, or considered a, "motor control center", then I would presume it would fall within the scope of that code section.

No a MCC and a VFD are not the same and that code section does not apply to a VFD. Look at the Article 100 definition of MCC.

As far as similar, I would equate it to an individual Motor Starter, not an MCC

Some code sections in later chapters call for specific equipment to comply with 110.26(F). So just because 110.26(F) doesn't mention it doesn't necessarily mean the requirements don't apply. That said, I'm not familiar enough with the code sections that apply to VFDs to tell you one way or the other.

A Motor Control Center is a defined term in the NEC and don't see how anyone could see a single or multiple VFDs mounted on a wall as an MCC.
Motor Control Center
An assembly of one or more enclosed sections having a common power bus and principally containing motor control units. (CMP-11)
