Re: 110.26

Working clearance for what?

I don't think there's enough of a question to answer.

Re: 110.26

physis, This would be working clearance for HVAC Units mounted above ceiling that have 277 volt controls. That would met 110.26(A)

Re: 110.26

Bob The first paragraph of 110.26 applies to all equipment in all locations.

110.26 Spaces About Electrical Equipment.
Sufficient access and working space shall be provided and maintained about all electric equipment to permit ready and safe operation and maintenance of such equipment. Enclosures housing electrical apparatus that are controlled by lock and key shall be considered accessible to qualified persons.
Once we get to 110.26(A) it becomes less clear.

In some areas I work the inspector will enforce 110.26(A)(1) Depth of Working Space and 110.26(A)(2) Width of Working Space.

110.26(A)(3) Height of Working Space. is not possible to comply with above a suspended ceiling

The work space shall be clear and extend from the grade, floor, or platform.........
110.26(B) Clear Spaces. is another one that is IMO imposable to comply with for equipment in a suspended ceiling. I doubt any building occupant will accept a 36" x 36" square on the floor that they can never use for furniture.

Selective enforcement at best.

Re: 110.26

This very subject is being tossed around here at work.

"Sufficient access and working space".
IMO, this is a general requirement that helps the working man who has to deal with the lack of safe space to work on electrical equipment, almost on a daily basis.

How to enforce it may be a different idea. I do not believe it gives the inspector the means to enforce the 30 inch width, 36 inch depth requirements, but does help to keep pipes, etc... from being installed in front of boxes creating a potential hazard.
Sufficient is judgemental by the very nature of what different people will think of what is sufficient.

Re: 110.26

This was an extensive issue here about 1 1/2 years ago in regards to residential a/c condensor units.Mechanical would come in prior to us and install their unit and 90 % of the time directley in front of the pull out disc..Trim time our INSTALLERS :D Well this became a real issue with Mr./Mrs. H/O`R.J boxes ,pipe a really nasty installation on their $ new home.I called the chief and met him to try to remedy this situation. This is residential and the A/C pad isn`t set to specs all the time.Well we decided that 110.26 applied to working on ENERGIZED equiptment.Simply use a breaker lock out and 110.26 is satisfied. As long as the disc was not below the units height and was encroached by the unit , lock it out done deal.
