Unless I lost my mind (good posibility) I read somewhere that if 12-2 NM was run from a luminaire to a switch, the white wire had to "take power down" and the black wire " bring power back" Which code am I think of and which code says I need to re-identify any white wire if changed to a ungrounded conductor. Having a total mind blank.

200.7(c)(2)

This topic comes up every so often; one recent example is this thread. I am of the opinion that 200.7(C)(2) is an anachronism that is made obsolete by 200.7(C)(1). Apparently the code writing committee agrees with me, as proposal 5-44 to delete 200.7(C)(2) was accepted for the 2011 NEC.

Cheers, Wayne

I was taught to leave the switch leg black and use the white, re-identified so as not to have 2 white wires at the load.

I second that, and also use a different color wire nut

makes one think, why did someone use a different color wire nut when they stuck together the white and black wire  ;)
